Prof. Ghassan Maalouf receives the FFN Presidents Award 2016
September 2016

Prof. Ghassan Maalouf awarded the first ever Presidents Award from the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN)

During the FFN meeting held on September 8, 2016 in Rome, Prof. Maalouf stated that when he launched the Lebanese National Campaign for Osteoporosis in 1995, he soon realized that fragility fractures were an important issue that was not well attended to. He approached his colleagues Prof. Lars Lidgren from Sweden, and Prof. Wolfhart Puhl from Germany. Together, they created the first and so far only scientific society dealing with fragility fractures: the Fragility Fracture Network, registered in Switzerland in 2005.

The aim of the society is to treat fragility fractures which have been increasing steadily in incidence due to an increase in life expectancy. The society promotes the use of a holistic approach in treatment, including multi-disciplinary stakeholders such as Geriatricians, Internal Medicine Physicians, Anesthesiologists, Nurses, Physical Therapists, and others. Upon practice, this proved to be effective and rewarding at many levels: A very noticeable decrease in mortality, excellent fracture fixation, improved quality of life, and decrease in overall related cost of treatment was shown and published in several trials.

Today, Bellevue Medical Center is the first hospital in the Middle East utilizing this holistic approach. Recently, an FFN Liaison Nurse dedicated to following patients with fragility fractures outside of the hospital in their long term care has been appointed.

As a result, the Lebanese Minister of Public Health has agreed to cover all inpatient treatment costs for patients older than 65 y/o, including those with fragility fractures, following the work published by the society. A memo was sent from the ministry disseminating the new suggested guidelines.

It is a source of great pride and joy to have the Lebanese ministry responsive to these medical advances, and also to have our country able to influence the world’s medical guidelines.
